Why are Hyperlinks Blue?
About the Project
While working at Mozilla, I was brainstorming with a coworker about UX articles I could write for Mozilla.org’s blog. The concept of a deep dive into different user interface elements came up, such as why links were so often blue on webites.
I realized something – I didn’t actually know why hyperlinks were blue. After a quick session browsing the internet and discussing it over with my collegues, I realized, no one really knew why links were blue.
The Journey
In any spare moment I had between projects, I researched. I read blogs, articles, and scholarly journals on the topic of the early web, how it was made, and who made it. This lead to the creation of my first blog post outlining the timeline of what has historically gone into hyperlink styling. A few months later, I published a second followup article with new information gathered from the community and additional research. Finally, I published all of these findings with the ACM.
